Native growing regions: Russia, China, Japan, & Korea
It’s used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, traditional medicine of Japan, Korea & Russia and by European, Canadian, and American herbalists(1).
In Chinese wu wei zi translates to "five-flavor berry" as it has all five flavor profiles (sweet, salty, bitter, pungent, sour). It’s traditionally used as a tonic herb in TCM(2). The term adaptogen was coined by Dr. Nikolai Lazarev in 1947, defined as “an agent that allows the body to counter adverse physical, chemical, or biological stressors by raising nonspecific resistance toward such stress, thus allowing the organism to ”adapt” to the stressful circumstances.”(3)
